Background & Influences

I have been playing the piano for most of my life. I owe a great deal to my studies at Brown University and Berklee College of Music. The most important teacher in my musical life was my first jazz piano teacher, Laurie Altman. His vital influence is what led me to seek a career teaching jazz to young musicians. Laurie taught me to make music with my own voice and to approach every musical experience with the mind of a composer. Since then, I have had the privilege of studying with many great teachers and mentors, including Joanne Brackeen, Frank Carlberg, Ed Tomassi, Greg Hopkins and Herb Pomeroy. My musical inspiration comes from what I learned from these dynamic teachers, from my family, and from the love and support of my wife Margery.

I teach classes and lead ensembles as the Director of Instrumental Music at Belmont Hill School, and I perform at various venues in the Boston area. Please visit my Contact page if you would like to find out more about the services I provide and how to hire me. Even if I am not the right man for the job, I am always happy to give suggestions to lead you in the right direction.

Some of my influences include Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Charles Mingus, and Chick Corea, to name just a few important figures. I thrive on discovering new music and listening for new ideas and sounds.
